We become more interested when the sound is new, noticeably louder than before, or comes with rough running, hesitation, a check engine light, or reduced power.

Timing chains, guides, and tensioners keep the camshafts synchronized with the crankshaft. Wear in this system can begin as a light ticking or rattling noise and become more noticeable during acceleration.

A weak tensioner may not control the chain properly, while worn guides can allow extra movement. Regular maintenance with the correct oil specification is especially important on engines that use engine oil pressure to operate timing components. If the noise has recently gotten louder or is accompanied by a timing-related fault code, have the system checked before more driving adds wear.
